BACKGROUND: Traditional “smokestack”
industries including the energy, chemical, and advanced
manufacturing sectors are all faced with an aging workforce
with retirements
estimated at 40-60% over the next five years. Despite offering
high wage secure jobs paying as much as $90,000 per
year,
these industries have been handicapped by a blue collar
image and difficulty in recruiting a diverse, young
and
qualified workforce.
GOAL: To create an industry-driven
career pathway providing disadvantaged youth and adults
the full range of skills and competencies needed to move
to entry-level positions with energy, chemical, and other
advanced manufacturing employers.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: Positions
typically pay $23 hour to start with average wages of $60K
and above.
EMPLOYER PARTNERS: BP, ConocoPhillips,
Dow Chemical, Exxon-Mobil, General Mills, Shell, and Valero

MODEL AND FRAMEWORK: Working
with employers, community colleges and workforce agencies,
GPA has developed a nine month career pathway leading to
entry-level placement as process technicians:
- Stage 1: Recruitment, assessment and screening
to company standards;
- Stage 2: Six month intensive customized
post-secondary training developed to industry standards;
- Stage 3: Paid try-out employment subsidized
by private and public funds; S
- Stage 4: Placement
GPA is also developing a Bridge program to
ready lower skilled youth to enter this pathway.
